Can someone explain how a cut Baseball Player’s contract work?
The Tigers cut Shefield and owed him a lot of money on a 2 yr contract. Suppose the Tigers owed him 20 million for the 2 yrs left on the contract. I know the tigers would still owe it to him even if he doesn’t play. So, when he signs for the Mets, does that mean he is free for the Mets, and basically the Tigers are paying him 20 mil to play for ANOTHER team??
This happened last year when the Padres cut Jim Edmonds and the Cubs picked him up. The Cubs had to pay Edmonds the league minimum and the Padres had to pay what they owed him from his contract minus the league minimum the Cubs were paying him.
